Silky Selkies

Lately I’ve been tormenting Doc by talking about selkies every chance I get. You would think he’d be grateful that I’ve (almost) stopped going on about trolls, but this is not the case.

During a selkie rampage, I drew this:

I figure, if you have the ability to turn into a seal, a leopard seal would be the way to go.

But then! I got invited to hang out with Gail and say good-bye to her before she leaves for Antarctica for 18 months. She told me that she will get to see penguins and leopard seals and go ice climbing… I told her, “hold that thought!” and then gave her this drawing as a going-away gift. To her, it is a leopard seal. To me, it is a selkie.

  1. eI love selkies! I always have since I was a kid and read the legends. I love shapeshifters in general but selkies are somehow so interesting. I like to think, as magic folk, their lives as seals are more mystical than ordinary natural seals. I mean they know magic portals through the water, have a world beyond in the ocean within the ocean itself where they meet and sometimes,, perhaps, dance in moonlight as humans on secluded islands as ceremonies. Stuff in my head. 🙂 I agree, leopard seal or sealion is the way to go.

    1. Hooray! I do agree with you, that Selkies’ lives under the water must be just as or more magical than their lives above it. Oh, the secrets of the deep they must know! I almost made my 24 Hour Comic last year about Selkies, but I went with trolls and forest-folk instead. I am usually this predictable, yes.
