Skating Around

Doc and I have been learning to skateboard, which has been great fun. On two cheap boards which we got from yard sales, we’ve been skating around like wobbly dorks. It has been a lot of fun, and I have quickly fallen in love with skating. Piece-by-piece, we plan to upgrade every part of our boards with nicer components. Which of course brings to mind the paradox of Theseus’ ship.

While I cannot speak to the philosophical implications of whether my board will still be the same board that I got from a yard sale, I can say that the folks over at Mission Sk8boards are amazing. They are super friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Since I had such a good experience with them, I already can’t wait to go back and get better trucks (which I need to do soon, since mine got bent and now my board always lists to one side).

One major downside to learning to skate, however, is falling. I didn’t realize how much I hurt my butt from falling off my board until I went bouldering weeks later. I slipped and fell from the top of a problem after throwing for a hold, and even though I landed on my feet and on a pad, suddenly my butt hurt the same way as when I fell off my board. It got better after about a half an hour, but that was still sort of scary. I had never had an injury that persisted like that before… hopefully it will heal and I will be back to falling from bouldering problems with ease.

Until then, my consolation will be how much fun it is to repeatedly groan “ow my coccyx!” when I fall. Everybody lovesĀ  it when I do that.
